Gujarat Titans (GT) will play their first season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) without Hardik Pandya. The team traded Pandya to Mumbai Indians (MI) before the auction in Dubai. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain for the IPL 2024 season.
Under Gill’s leadership, GT aims to continue playing aggressive cricket. In the 2024 IPL auction in Dubai, they spent INR 30.30 crores to acquire eight players, including notable names like Shahrukh Khan and Umesh Yadav. Their most expensive purchase was the Australian left-handed pacer Spencer Johnson for INR 10 crore. After the auction, GT now has a 25-member squad, making it important to conduct a SWOT analysis.

Strengths
Retained Players –
Gujarat Titans boast a strong lineup with well-known international players like Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rashid Khan, and Mohammed Shami. Over the past two years, these players have played crucial roles, contributing to GT’s success in the lucrative league. Additionally, Kane Williamson will join the team in the 2024 season, adding further strength to the Titans’ batting lineup with his comeback.
Exceptional Finishers –GT secured Shahrukh Khan for INR 7.40 crores in the 2024 auction, expanding their squad. The Chennai-born player is anticipated to bring his aggressive batting style to the team, serving as a match-finisher. In addition to Shahrukh, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia also have the ability to stylishly conclude games as seen in last two year.
Afghanistani spin-bowling duo–
Rashid Khan will spearhead Gujarat’s spin attack in the upcoming season, receiving support from his compatriot Noor Ahmad. Rashid is renowned for causing trouble to batters with his leg-break bowling, and Noor Ahmad demonstrated his ability to trouble opponents with wrist-spin bowling in 2023. The Afghan pair aims to once again create challenges for batters while playing for GT in 2024.
Weaknesses
Lack of quality all-rounders
Gujarat Titans face a challenge in the all-rounder department following the departure of Hardik Pandya. The team has players like Rashid Khan, Vijay Shankar, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rahul Tewatia, who contribute across all facets of the game. However, their performance records indicate that they may not be as impactful as Pandya.
In terms of fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami will lead the unit, supported by his Indian teammates Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma. Apart from Shami, both pacers have struggled for consistent performances. Umesh had a tough outing with the ball in the 2023 edition for KKR, while Mohit has played only three matches since the final against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in May 2023, where the 35-year-old found it challenging to take wickets.
Opportunities
Shahrukh Khan, who didn’t have remarkable performances for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two seasons, is determined to showcase an exceptional performance in the colors of GT. Spencer Johnson, who secured a lucrative 10-crore deal from the franchise, will need to prove his worth in the tournament. Umesh Yadav had a less successful run with the ball in 2023, but in 2024, his goal is to deliver outstanding performances for the Titans and extend his IPL career for several more years.
Threats
Shubman Gill will take on the role of captain for the first time in the league. As a batsman, he performed exceptionally well for GT in 2023, stepping into the shoes of Hardik Pandya, who will now play for Mumbai Indians. In his new leadership position, Gill is entrusted with the responsibility of building on Hardik’s excellent work.
With New Zealand captain Kane Williamson also part of the GT squad, the team management has shown confidence in Gill’s leadership. Considering the team’s future, the decision appears sensible, but Gill’s lack of experience as a captain may pose a challenge for the side in the competition.
